A Change of Pace - Exploring Abstract Painting

"Abstraction allows one to see with their mind what they cannot see physically with their eyes."
Arshile Gorky
Sometimes it's good to break with routine and do something different, challenge yourself to change directions for a while, take a risk and explore a less comfortable path. Returning to abstract painting after many years seemed to be the perfect opportunity for diving into unknown and unpredictable territory.
Painting abstractly may look easy, but it's actually very difficult to pull off a cohesive painting using only the elements of shape, color, value and texture without the benefit of a known familiar object.. While abstract art is generally nonrepresentational, the two vertical paintings below were influenced by memories of looking over a cliff to see the waterfall and river below. Can you see it?

The unique aspect of abstraction is that every individual will see something different - based on how their mind sees and perceives. The art in itself becomes a mysterious language that is deeply personal and universal.

These renderings are a venture away from the familiar order and logic of my landscapes and flowers yet I recognize that switching directions from time to time will only enhance my other work because I am growing as an artist. Challenges and taking risks are always good for creating new perspectives in painting and in life.
