The Arrival of Spring

Warmer days, bright colorful blossoms and the sight of new growth gives us all a sense of rejuvenation and invites us to consider new ideas and aspirations.  I'm embracing the arrival of spring with this new collection of small paintings that are mostly rendered in watercolor, gouache, or a combination of both.  Years ago I painted in a more realistic style using watercolor, but I eventually transitioned to oil and acrylic paint as I gravitated toward impressionism.  I have enjoyed the challenge of returning to these water based mediums and finding my own unique style in their application.

I endeavor to keep these paintings loose and spontaneous.  I use a large brush as I intuitively explore shapes and color combinations daily in a variety of subject matter.

Most of the paintings in this new collection are small and will fit in a mat with a 5x7 or 8x10 opening.  They make great gift ideas!

Painting On A Rainy Day

Last Sunday I finally had an afternoon to devote to painting.  There was a nice steady rain all morning and then early in the afternoon  the sun was barely making her appearance through the mist.  I wasn't sure what I was going to paint that day until I opened the blinds to the large window in my temporary studio.  I quickly decided to paint what was before me - the wet damp woods silhouetted against the light gray clouds.  The birds were perched in the trees right in front of the window as if they were waiting for the rain to subside.   Instead of seeing the day as dreary, I found it beautiful and peaceful.  I opened the window so I could experience the earthy smell of the damp woods and hear the birds.

All my large blank canvases are in storage for the moment since I'm living in limbo.  I looked through the existing paintings leaning against the wall and found one that I never really liked too much.  I decided to paint over the existing abstract but allowed some of the warm colors to shine through where it worked.

It is great to plan paintings, but sometimes the best things happen when you experiment and let spontaneous happy accidents occur.
